Vapor-X Cooling

Vapor Chamber Technology is based on the same principles as heatpipe technology. A liquid coolant is vaporised at a hot surface, the resulting vapor is condensed at a cold surface then the liquid is returned to the hot surface. The recirculation process is controlled by a patented wick system. SAPPHIRE Vapor-X flattens the whole system into a slim chamber - which in the graphics application is mounted in contact with the surface of the graphics chip.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E
It looks like Sapphire has struck gold with their HD 4890 Toxic Vapor-X. The card offers considerably improved performance over the HD 4890 reference design and can beat the GeForce GTX 280. It does all that without being noisy, it is much quieter than all other HD 4890 cards I tested so far. It's great that Sapphire finally listened to our constant nagging: "your cards are too noisy". Another plus is that Sapphire has gone with the reference design voltage regulators which means that the card supports voltage control via software for GPU core and memory voltage. Personally I am not sure if there is a gain from going PCI-E 8+6 voltage connectors from 6+6 but it certainly won't hurt. The only thing that I can complain about is that the overclocking potential beyond Sapphire's stock clocks is very limited - we saw only about 1%. However, since Sapphire's card runs at 1.4V, you can up the voltage to 1.5V safely, then you should be able to reach 1 GHz on the core.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E
At the heart of the Toxic HD 4890 is its vapor chamber cooler. The vapor chamber is made from copper and is directly responsible for drawing heat off the RV790 GPU. From there Sapphire relies on three large heatpipes. The heatpipes give the vapor chamber cooler an added boost of cooling, much like a second turbocharger can be added to an engine to enhance its performance. The OC’ed clock speeds are also nice, but what really pushes the Toxic board over the top in our minds is the addition of the 8-pin PCIe power connector. The beefier power connector supplies the card with more juice than the standard 6-pin power connector, helping to ensure stability at high clock speeds. Sapphire’s done it again though. In our opinion the Toxic HD 4890 blends the perfect fusion of price, OC’ing, and cooling all into one package. The Toxic HD 4890 is physically the exact same card, only with a BIOS that’s been programmed with slower clocks. Save your money and opt for the Toxic. You won’t be disappointed.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E
The Sapphire HD4890 Toxic edition adds a couple very nice bonuses to the already great HD4890 package, which makes it all that much more tempting. The Toxic edition of this card is not only in the upper echelon of cards in terms of stock core clock, it is also equipped with a much improved cooler, and extra power through the 8-pin + 6-pin power layout that should result in some fantastic overclocks. On top of all of this, the card is attractively priced at $259, right down the middle of the 4890 price range, which goes from $215 to $315 on Newegg. On this particular card, we knocked out an impressive 1040MHz core clock, beating out even the XFX XXX edition we tested nearly two months ago. I can only hope that the Atomic edition we are about to tear into can take us even higher.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E
Beginning with the performance rating, the Sapphire HD4890 Toxic Vapor-X video card thoroughly exceeded any expectations we had for frame rate performance. While the HD4890 could be considered the most powerful single-GPU video card on the planet, that claim will depend on variables like factory-overclocked speeds. Given our benchmark test results, the massively-overclocked HD4890 almost always exceeded frame rate performance of our factory-overclocked ASUS ENGTX285TOP GTX 285. Of course, the Radeon HD4770 CrossFireX set did even better, and for less. In conclusion, the Sapphire HD4890 Toxic Vapor-X RV790 video card 11150-01-40R is exactly what consumers have wanted for more than a year: an ultra-high performance graphics that costs much less than the competition.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E
If you are looking to upgrade your system or just your video card and desire the coolest quiet preoverclocked performance a video card can give straight out of the box, do not overlook the Sapphire HD 4890 Toxic. With the Vapo-X cooling system this is one of the most quiet and efficient air cooling system on the market. I was a little shocked that I took a performance hit (in some resolutions) when I overclocked the card, I first thought it was a heat issue but that wasn't the case. The dip in performance wasn't much but when you overclock you do expect some type of a increase. Overall my suggestion would be if you choose a Sapphire HD 4890 Toxic choose it for the superior cooling you'll get with the Vapor-X heatsink and fan, for clock speeds and price that trump most preoverclcked versions straight out of the box.
