SAPPHIRE HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE (Game Edition)
It is quite evident they are both perfectly positioned to take full advantage of the market segments they are competing in. ATI really did make a series of rational, well thought-out decisions when releasing the HD 5770 and HD 5850 since while there is enough of a buffer zone between them in terms of price and performance that they will never end up competing with one another. In our opinion, the Sapphire HD 5850 is truly a card to be reckoned with since it incorporates near-HD 5870 performance into a package which is smaller, more efficient and quite affordable to boot. Affordability is the name of the game these days and in this, the HD 5850 wins hands down. To make matters even better, it is dead silent when compared to ATI’s previous generations. The Sapphire HD 5770 on the other hand is an interesting card in its own right by bringing the features of higher end cards to the $199 price point. No, it won’t wow you with its performance at eye-bleeding resolutions but for those of you on a budget, there is nothing else on the market today that even comes close to its appeal. What we really appreciate is that Sapphire didn’t go down the cost savings road with this card by changing out the cooler or dumbing down the component selection like some of their competitors. Personally, I’m of the opinion that both Sapphire’s HD 5770 and HD 5850 provide excellent value for your money by offering high-end performance coupled with excellent efficiency.

SAPPHIRE HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE (Game Edition)

SAPPHIRE HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE (Game Edition)
The Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 beat the 1GB GTX 260 quite soundly in every test. The overclock gave me more of a performance boost than I would have expected from a 5% overclock, in all but one test the gains were significant. Even in the other test, a gain of 1 FPS is about what I’d expect from a small overclock, so even it isn’t anything to sneeze at. The Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 turned out to be everything I expected. It looks sharp with its Black/Red motif and excellent graphics. The cooler is very effective, and the fan silent. I found nothing not to like about this video card.

SAPPHIRE HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE (Game Edition)
The HD5850 is significantly lower priced than the HD5870, but doesn't perform cheaply - this is the bang/buck hero of the Cypress line up. One of the few GPUs to support DirectX 11 as well as support for value adding technologies such as Eyefinity and HDMI 1.3a and premium Blu-ray audio formats, it's a well rounded package. An nice package with good build quality and high performance components, and a coupon for one of DirectX 11's showcase titles means you can buy with confidence.

SAPPHIRE HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE (Game Edition)
The HD5850 is a good option for those looking for a gaming graphics card with solid, above average performance. That statement would fit with just about any HD5850 card on the market, and while Sapphire usually does something interesting to set their cards apart from the rest of the crowd, this one seems to simply follow the norm. I don't really have any negative comments regarding the card itself.. The bottom line is that the HD5850 is an excellent choice for those in need of some serious gaming muscle, but not the kind of muscle that costs $300, $400, or even more. For $270, the Sapphire card offers great performance, fairly low noise output, decent energy efficiency, and all of the cool new features available in the HD5XXX series.

SAPPHIRE HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE (Game Edition)
The Sapphire HD 5850 does not disappoint. It's one step down the performance ladder and it gives the GTX285 a run for its money. When you consider the fact that this card retails for 260 bucks or 100 dollars less than the GTX 285, the former heavyweight single GPU champ takes a beating in the price vs. performance battle. The temperatures the Sapphire HD 5850 produced under load were actually quite low for a card with this kind of horsepower. Sapphire's HD 5850 was able to produce excellent overclocking results by posting a core clock increase from 725Mhz to 870MHz and and increase on the Samsung GDDR5 memory to 1225Mhz from 1000MHz, increases of 20%+ on both counts. When tested, the overclocks yielded significant gains throughout the entire suite of games and benchmarks almost reaching the level of the HD 5870! If you want great performance in the 250 dollar price range you would be hard pressed to make a choice other than the Sapphire HD 5850 at this point.

SAPPHIRE HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE (Game Edition)
In terms of DirectX 10 performance however, the HF5850 was more of a threat to the GeForce GTX 285. In synthetic 3DMark Vantage tests, the Radeon HD 5850 performed up to 22% better than an overclocked GTX 285, depending on the test scene and resolution. Temperatures at load were very good, even though the Cypress GPU has 54% more transistors per square millimeter of chip die than the GT200. Aside from impressive DirectX 11 performance, electrical power consumption was extremely efficient with only 31W consumed at idle and 157W under full 3D load. For the time being, ATI's Radeon HD 5850 is the best value among single-GPU products available, and one the only graphics card capable of playing DirectX 11 games in Windows 7. For the cost, my recommendation is for the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 DirectX 11 video card. High-performance gamers and multi-monitor power users can't go wrong at this price point, and will only get better.

SAPPHIRE HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE (Game Edition)
ATI has hit a home run with the HD 5800 series as the cards are the fastest single chip solutions on the market for most applications and the full compliance with DirectX 11 allows you to have a sense of future-proofing more than any other card on the market today. You have two choices with the HD 5800 series, the HD 5870 and the HD 5850 both separated by nearly $100. At this moment the cards available are all reference cards with the same core and memory clocks, meaning that the Sapphire card is a good choice for those wanting a no-nonsense ATI card. At $279, the HD 5850 is an excellent buy doubling the performance from the HD 4870 which is no mean feat.
