In short then, there's little more that we can say other than calling this the most impressive Radeon HD 5850-based graphics board we've seen thus far, all for a price point not a million miles away from a reference-based Radeon HD 5850. If you're looking for something a little different then the Radeon HD 5850 Toxic seems like a perfect choice - It's noticeably faster than a reference card, and it boasts probably the best air cooling solution you'll find on an AMD graphics board. It's a double-whammy that's certainly caught our attention, and I don't doubt it may well have caught yours too.

The Sapphire HD 5850 TOXIC Edition is factory overclocked to 765MHz core and 1125MHz (4500MHz effective) memory speeds. The performance numbers show that the games and benchmarks love this extra clock frequency boost. Our ears also like the Vapor-X cooling technology as this card is quieter than a reference designed Radeon HD 5850. It's not every day that you get better performance and less heat or noise, but with the SAPPHIRE HD 5850 TOXIC Edition you get the best of all worlds!. Overclocking performance on the Sapphire HD 5850 TOXIC Edition video card was amazing. We were able to take the card from 765MHz core clock and 1125MHz memory clock all the way up to 901MHz core clock and 1200MHz memory clock. This is a 24% increase on the core clock and a 20% increase on the memory clock from a reference design Radeon HD 5850 as a normal ATI Radeon HD 5850 runs at just 700MHz on the core and 1000MHz on the memory. By overclocking the Sapphire HD 5850 TOXIC Edition graphics card it was nearly able to perform on the same level as the Radeon HD 5870! Pricing aside, the Sapphire HD 5850 TOXIC Edition is hands down the fastest and greatest looking Radeon HD 5850 graphics card that we have ever laid our hands on and for that we give it the Editor's Choice Award.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE
The AMD ATI Radeon Sapphire Toxic HD 5850 brings a new era for increased level-enthusiasts to ramp up their gaming platforms to Microsoft’s DirectX 11 specification, while maintaining the core platform compatibility to use DVI-D, DVI-I, and finally HDMI for newer LCD monitors. The AMD ATI Radeon Sapphire Toxic HD 5850 looks incredible than the standard reference cards with a Cypress chipcore that is sleek and integrated on the main board. The ATI Radeon Sapphire Toxic HD 5850 is simply an incredible buy for consumers looking to get the Cypress chip power with DirectX 11 support, Eyefinity power for multi-display processing, incredible overclocking and HDMI onboard output for an incredible power suite on a card that is ingenious as much as it is stable and prurient to enthusiast needs. What sort of release AMD is planning past the AMD ATI Radeon 5970 chipset is still to be seen and remains very promising.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE
When the term "Radeon" is uttered, "Sapphire" is another that seems to follow. While there are a great number of vendors who produce ATI-based graphics cards, such as PowerColor, XFX, Gigabyte, ASUS and so forth, its Sapphire who holds the dominant lead in the marketplace. In some cases, and markets, this could be considered a bad thing, but Sapphire is doing some great things, so it's hard to not feel like it's the competition that's not trying hard enough to wow us (a lot of this also has to do with market penetration). From that perspective, the Toxic is priced-right, and given that price, it performs well... noticeably better than a reference-clocked HD 5850. But, it's the overclocking that really helps make this card shine, because we managed to achieve such a high stable overclock, that the performance we saw nearly matched (and in the case of 3DMark, surpassed) the performance of the HD 5870, which retails for $400. That's great to see. Given it's interesting design, and superb overclocking-ability, I feel compelled to award Sapphire's Toxic an Editor's Choice award.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE
Across the board the Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 TOXIC is better than the reference design: improved cooling, improved noise levels and improved performance; the design and components offer a great platform for serious overclockers. Interestingly, our gaming tests show more improvements on the Sapphire original design HD 5850 TOXIC over the reference design in DirectX 11 titles. The price/performance ratio of the original HD 5850 was awesome, and despite the adjusted base card prices, and the TOXIC's premium over it, this is still the best bang/buck enthusiast card. Rage3D awards the Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 TOXIC 4 1/2 stars! If you're an overclocker, or crossfire user, this is definitely the design for you. If you just want out-of-the-box BANG you won't be disappointed. Throwing in a 50% off coupon for a Sapphire DisplayPort active adapter would have been nice and, with this level enthusiast card where an included title is expected, given the massive push DiRT2 received for the Cypress launch we're left wishing an AvP Steam key was included as well.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE
As ATI's largest partner, Sapphire usually can put together something special once the reference cards are released. Time and again we have seen the Atomic, Vapor-X, and Toxic cards come spilling out the doors with special cooling setups, as well as better components used throughout to offer a video card that is built to run cooler, clock higher, and provide a higher level of gaming satisfaction. Sapphire has hit this mark with the Toxic HD 5850 OC Edition. With the use of Black Diamond Chokes, Solid capacitors, and Sapphire's exclusive Vapor-X technology, they have built a card that outperforms the reference version across the board - as it should. As a specialty card, something has to differentiate it from the rest of the pack. The cooling solution and looks are two of these things that have been added to the Toxic HD 5850. You get a cover for the Vapor-X cooling solution that looks great with the deep blue Sapphire blue stripes instead of well.... the Batmobile. When you get down to it the Sapphire Toxic Hd 5850 is a winner with excellent cooling and increased performance without a severe cost penalty over the reference cards. If you are looking for a new video card and the looks and performance appeal to your senses, the Sapphire Toxic HD 5850 is not a bad way to go!

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE
The Sapphire HD 5850 Toxic is strong across the board, and has no real big downsides either, besides one big one -- in short, this card is recommended. Sapphire has just added on top of value of the HD 5850 here, with the Toxic model: you get a real overclock, that gives you a edge over standard HD 5850's; you get a well-rounded and plump bundle; you get a great cooler, if you really want to push the OC limits, and on top of that, the Toxic offers good power usage, and the full feature set of the HD 5000 series, such as DirectX 11 and Eyefinity. All in all though, the Sapphire HD 5850 is a good card. Especially if the price falls closer to other HD 5850's on the market, you should give this card serious consideration.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE
The Saphire Radeon HD 5850 Toxic Edition performs perfectly for its price point and excells in the cooling catagory due to the Vapor-X cooling solution. The Toxic 5850 has a factory tuned overclock which is guaranteed, so the 9% increase in performance over a stock 5850 gives it more of an advantage. When I purchase a “Branded" video card, I expect extras and want those extras at a minimal price, the Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 Toxic Edition delivers both.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE
While the Toxic definitely doesn’t encroach into the performance envelope of the high-end HD 5870, it isn’t priced like an ultra high end card either. For a mere $30 premium over a reference-based product, this card retains all the best features of a reference HD 5850 like high efficiency and Eyefinity support while adding things that are sure to appeal to a wide variety of buyers. Basically, if the performance of a HD 5870 is appealing but the card itself is out of your price league, the HD 5850 Toxic is a perfect alternative. Yet there is so much more to the HD 5850 than performance; great temperatures and very quiet operation also make an appearance. It seems like in every Sapphire review of late we rave about their Vapor-X cooling technology and this one is no different. Basically, it allows heat to be quickly whisked away from the core towards the fins of the heatsink assembly. This in turn allows the large fan to spin at a leisurely pace and makes the Toxic as quiet as the reference HD 5850 while offering vastly superior cooling performance. Even though 2010 is still young, we can honestly say that the Sapphire HD 5850 Toxic is the best card we have reviewed so far this year. If you are looking for excellent performance and a quiet cooler that performs miracles while not putting a serious dent in your bank account, you don’t have to look any further than this card. As such, the Toxic does something no other product has ever done before : it wins our Dam Good, Dam Good Value and Dam Good Innovation awards. It really is that impressive.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE
We continue to be amazed by the performance and low acoustics of Sapphire’s vapor chamber cooling. By combining vapor chamber technology with conventional heatpipes, the 5850 Toxic board is able to run at very low temps: the 5850 Toxic ran cooler and quieter than ATI’s reference design even though it runs at much higher clock speeds than the reference design. Even under load, the board is barely audible – our Extech sound level meter couldn’t obtain a reading at a distance of 6”, indicating the Sapphire board was running quieter than 40dB. In terms of temps, the 5850 Toxic ran 7-8 degrees cooler than the stock ATI cooler in our testing. Temps were under 60 degrees Celsius at load. This is simply an incredible feat of engineering from Sapphire: the Toxic board runs cooler and quieter than the stock Radeon 5850 while also delivering more performance. If you can afford to fork over the cash though, you’d be hard-pressed to beat Sapphire’s 5850 Toxic. As far as Radeon 5850 cards go, it doesn’t get any better than this at the moment.

The Sapphire Toxic Radeon HD 5850 Radeon HD 5850 is a nice card. Sapphire has it clocked at almost to the maximum permissible by AMD. The beauty is that you could get the guarantee that the card has no problem at these high clock speeds. At these frequencies the 5850 is almost as fast as a normal 5870. The big advantage of the TOXIC lies in the much quieter cooler. We compare the Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 Toxic with the standard AMD cooler based on Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 Black Edition, there is a difference of almost 10 dB (A) in noise. The lower noise and better performance in our opinion the additional cost of around 40 euros over a standard Radeon HD 5850 definitely worth it. Especially when you consider that an entry-level Radeon HD 5870 again an average of 65 euros more expensive than those Toxic

SAPPHIRE TOXIC HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE
That said, there's always room for more performance, and this is where Sapphire's Radeon HD 5850 Toxic comes in, bumping up core and (more notably) memory clock speeds to ramp up frame rates a little further, often doing just enough to push performance up into a higher echelon as far as resolution or anti-aliasing levels are concerned - A fact which makes the factory overclocks on this board a useful feature rather than merely a nice little commodity. This is coupled with yet another fine example of Sapphire's Vapor-X vapour chamber cooling, which never fails to impress and adds an additional layer of desirability to the already impressive hardware that it sits atop. In short then, there's little more that we can say other than calling this the most impressive Radeon HD 5850-based graphics board we've seen thus far, all for a price point not a million miles away from a reference-based Radeon HD 5850

Back when we first tested the 5850 we found it to be a card which offered a great balance of price and performance. Sapphire have taken that product, improved the look of the PCB, enhanced the specifications and attached a superior cooler giving us one of the most impressive cards we have ever tested. In each of the games we tested the Sapphire 5850 outperformed the reference design card by a significant margin and the GTX 285 by more. Playback of high definition content also resulted in good performance which is backed up by a great HDMI audio solution that currently cannot be matched by Nvidia’s high end products, including the more expensive GTX 285. While media and gaming performance is great we also need to make note of the excellent figures produced by the cooler. The 5850 Toxic runs 40/125MHz faster than the reference ATI design but manages to lower temperatures by 12 degrees Celsius which is a fantastic achievement… but not only that, it remained near silent throughout our testing.
